It is 1541. Hugh is a young man in the service of Lord Burgh at Gainsborough Hall. The manor has recently been visited by King Henry VIII who was travelling from Lincoln to York.
Hugh talks about the visit as well as day-to-day life at a Tudor manor house. The Head Cook describes the work carried out in the kitchens as preparations are made for the Royal Banquet. The religious upheaval caused by Henry's divorce seven years earlier is also discussed.
The follow-up worksheets are differentiated for children of all abilities from non-readers to the very able. An abridged version of the script is provided giving children experience of reading for information. A wide range of materials, extension activities and fact files allow children to explore the topic in more detail and make links to other areas of the curriculum.
